Class Action Lawsuits

In the 1970's the onslaught of Asbestos lawsuits began. The target of the class action lawsuits have been shipbuilders, manufacturers, mining companies and construction companies. Because many of these buildings/mines/ships still stand mesothelioma and of course mesothelioma class action lawsuits continue. Mesothelioma causes death so you would think that the reward should be substantial.

SEO for Lawyer Websites and Getting Links

10/7/09

In their process of refining over the years, Google has decided to lump websites together that have similar topics.

In chemistry, we learned the Le Chatalier principle which states "a system in equilibrium will respond to stress in such a way as to counteract that stress". The search engines are no different. If there is a problem on the web, the search engines have to counteract it.

And one issue the early Internet encountered was a lot of spammy scammers in a couple of the fields -- namely Sports, Adult, and Cars among other topics. So Google invented what was called the "sandbox" to ensure that these websites did not receive automatically high rankings because of their propensity towards scamming.

If you think about the search engines as a referral, would you trust a friend's referrals if they were no good?

The need to split up the web in these different topics emerged as a result of a refinement in their algorithm -- not only to put a block on potentially harmful websites but to identify websites that are most likely to be applicable in any specific topic.

For example, a link from a very popular political blog may give a lot of link juice to a fellow political blogger but significantly less to a sports website.

Political websites are more likely to know which other political websites are good and pass on the popularity. But when it comes to another topic, they may not be as well informed.

So now we are onto lawyers. Over the past couple of years, there has been an abundance of lawyer websites. Lawyers are willing to spend a lot of money on Adwords and are therefore making any Joe Schmuck's lawyer website a big money maker. This perpetuates the trend of having a lot of these lawyer websites.

But fear not, the sandbox approach has not been so extreme with Lawyer websites as it has been for sports websites. This is because most lawyer websites do not typically sell scammy products or encourage you to do something illegal. They just want visitors to click on their advertisements.

With that said, there are a couple of things lawyers would need to do to ensure that their websites are given a bit more credibility than these "Made for Adsense" websites.

Here is what I did. I backtracked the links of the most popularly ranking lawyer websites. They all tended to have a common thread among them. They were linked from one or more of the following websites:

  1. FindLaw.com
  2. HG.org
  3. Lawyers.com
  4. Nolo.com
  5. Martindale.com
  6. BBB.org

By having links on one or more of the aforementioned websites, you will establish yourself as a credible lawyer website in the eyes of the search engines.

Since so many of your competition is already listed on those websites, it is critical for you to be as well. This is why the web is analyzed by topic. A sports website may not have the intrinsic necessity of being listed on these websites but a lawyer website would.
